Discover Sushi Asia Gourmet

Walking into Sushi Asia Gourmet feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that quietly knows exactly what it’s doing. Located at 1375 N Portage Path, Akron, OH 44313, United States, this diner-style sushi restaurant balances comfort and craft in a way that’s easy to appreciate, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for a relaxed dinner. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, and the consistency is what keeps pulling me back.

The menu is broad without being overwhelming, which is usually a good sign. You’ll find classic sushi rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and warm kitchen dishes that appeal even to diners who aren’t fully sold on raw fish yet. One server once explained how their rolls are prepped in small batches throughout the day to keep the rice texture right, and it shows. Sushi rice, according to food science research from institutions like the University of California, should be used within a few hours of seasoning to maintain balance between firmness and moisture. Here, the rice never feels dry or mushy, which is a detail seasoned sushi chefs emphasize worldwide.

From personal experience, the salmon avocado roll is a reliable favorite, but the specialty rolls are where curiosity pays off. I tried one of their house rolls after reading several local reviews praising its balance of flavors, and it delivered exactly that. The fish tasted clean, the sauces were used sparingly, and nothing felt overloaded. That restraint aligns with traditional Japanese culinary principles, often discussed by organizations like the Japan Culinary Academy, where harmony matters more than excess.

Beyond sushi, the hot food section deserves attention. Their teriyaki dishes arrive sizzling, and the chicken is consistently tender. I once watched a cook prepping sauces from scratch during a slower afternoon, which builds trust in what’s on the plate. Studies from the National Restaurant Association show diners increasingly value transparency in preparation, and this place naturally checks that box without trying too hard.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it easy to linger. Families, solo diners, and small groups all seem equally comfortable. The staff remembers faces, and that kind of familiarity adds to the experience. During one visit, I overheard a regular chatting with the owner about sourcing fish. While Ohio isn’t coastal, reputable distributors now supply Midwest restaurants with sushi-grade seafood within 24 to 48 hours, a logistics improvement supported by data from seafood industry reports. That explains why the fish here tastes fresh despite the distance from the ocean.

Pricing stays reasonable, especially considering portion sizes. Compared to similar locations around Akron, you’re getting solid value. Online reviews often mention this balance, and after multiple visits, I agree. Not every dish will blow you away, and that’s worth acknowledging. Some rolls lean familiar rather than adventurous, which may disappoint diners looking for extreme fusion. Still, that consistency is exactly what many locals appreciate.

What stands out most is how the restaurant fits into daily life rather than trying to be a special-occasion-only destination. It’s the kind of place you recommend confidently because you know what people will get. One friend, new to sushi, told me this was the first spot where raw fish felt approachable rather than intimidating. That speaks volumes about technique and quality control.

The location itself is easy to reach, with parking that doesn’t turn dinner into a chore. For anyone browsing menus online or scrolling through reviews before choosing where to eat, this diner earns its reputation through steady execution and honest food. In an industry where trends shift fast, it sticks to fundamentals, and that’s often the hardest thing to do well.

  • Absolutely amazing food! The staff is very nice and the food was incredible! I got the cold chicken appetizer and dry pot beef both 10/10. If you are anywhere near this place go.

  • Yumm! This is my fave place in the area. They’re always providing so much food in every dish. Great flavors, big portions, and overall tasty. Prices are super affordable. I’ve been here a handful of times but never remember to take a picture before diving into my meal. Staff is super friendly too! 10/10 recommend. Update - Still the best Chinese place to eat in the valley, Akron, Cuyahoga falls area. Food is fresh and delicious. Staff is super friendly and attentive. Would 100% recommend! Super authentic but they do have a more Americanized menu. My everyday order (&I come once a week or more), is the shredded potatoes, beef stew with potatoes, bok choy, beef with black pepper sauce, pork with potatoes.

  • I had the spicy girl and eel with avocado rolls. Both were delicious. My husband had the beef with cumin, it was quite spicy, but very food. We had various appetizers, we enjoyed them all. We are looking forward to another visit!

  • Really happy with our delivered order! Everything tasted so good! The scallion pancakes were crispy and warm. Ordered a boba tea and I was very impressed how they placed it in a small box to keep any possible spillage contained. The sushi was fresh and flavorful. The chicken lomein was delicious…if I had any complaint the noodles were slightly over cooked but was unbothered by it. Would definitely recommend!

  • The sushi was fresh and appealing. The Hot and Sour soup was delicious. Our entrees where delicious and freshly prepared. I really enjoyed the Hana Awaka sake drink. Service was friendly and prompt. The dining area was clean. Pricing was reasonable. The only improvement I would recommend is to chop the lettuce into smaller pieces. It was difficult to eat with chopsticks. I will return.

  • This place is an addiction. Before I go further, the szechuan menu is undoubtedly the highlight. We've come here innumerable times, and it has become, at its most infrequent, a weekly drug for us. Recurring dishes include mapo tofu, kung pao tofu, eggplant in garlic sauce, garlic bokchoy, veggie lo mein (it's somehow better without the proteins), spicy crispy fish filets, and tofu fish filets in bean sauce. My girlfriend, who doesn't even like fish, is a big fan of the last two dishes. The portions are very generous, save for the last mentioned dish. The portion for tofu fish filets in bean sauce is downright monstrous (if dining in, it is served in a large casserole dish). We've only encountered one mistake with an order in the past, and it was resolved expediently and professionally. The owner is very kind (and funny). This restaurant is also one of the few places that is outstanding both for dine-in and carry-out. Carry-out is quick and well packaged. I want to order now just writing about this place.

  • Amazing food! Easily the best Chinese food ever, it’s great every time we order, consistent and fresh ingredients! Highly recommend, wouldn’t go anywhere else!

  • The sushi I ordered was very good. Come prepared to eat a lot though because it's one price for your order. If I had just ordered six pieces of sushi, I don't think it would have been worth the money.
